Lockdown: A Chilling and Claustrophobic Psychological Thriller Kindle Edition
I’ve meticulously planned my escape. But fate has other plans…
Today’s the day. The things I’ve packed are hidden away and I’m waiting for the go-ahead to collect the keys to the new house.
I’m so close to escaping Justin’s moods, his drinking and his violent tendencies, which are gradually getting worse. His promises of change mean nothing anymore and I’ve got to get away from him.
But a national lockdown has just been announced.
My current four walls are now my prison and my dreams of freedom lay in tatters. Pregnant, asthmatic and terrified, the danger outside feels deadlier than the danger within, so I have no choice other than to accept my current fate. After all, we’re all in this together, right?
Wrong. Justin now has me exactly where he wants me, and the three weeks of government restrictions stretch before me like a gaping void.
As my life spirals into despair, I navigate the darkest corners of my empty existence and I’m sinking fast. Justin severs my contact with family and friends and his coercive control tightens like a noose. While the outside world is in turmoil, my deadliest adversary lurks within - the person I’m forced to live with.
With concerned neighbours attempting to reach out to me, Justin’s sinister web around the two of us tightens, especially when the help that’s being offered poses a direct threat to him. The situation is unbearable, and things eventually reach a breaking point.
Either one of us could survive the inevitable confrontation.
And either one of us could die.

About the author

Maria Frankland has a dubious internet search history and a very worried mother-in-law. However, neither of these things can stop her writing gripping psychological thrillers in which you’ll never find a happy-ever-after.
Her novels are mostly set in Otley in Yorkshire where you’ll hear the accent through all her characters. These are people you could live next door to, or closer still… don’t say you haven’t been warned.
Maria’s novels are fast-paced, down to earth and realistic. You never know what’s around the corner…

- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2025Great character development. Maria quickly connects the reader to the people in the story and builds on that connection. She also captures the fear and uncertainty of Covid when it initially hit. Well written and I'll be looking for more from her.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2024Although I’m now left with wanting a sequel to follow the main characters as they move forward. Perhaps the grown son can become the dangerous aggressor?
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2024Like reading or listening to the news. The story is set during the pandemic in London (?). The story of Melisa and Justin. Secrets are exposed, abuse is rampant, a best friend Annie, and the coming of a new child. At times it was hard to read, triggers! Well written, development of characters done with a knowing hand, and the same for the story line. Be aware of triggers! But a great read!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2024This can be a hard book to read especially if you have been in an abusive relationship. Will definitely bring back some unpleasant memories. The twist at the end surprised me. Didn't see that coming. Was a great book. You wonder how an ex wife and current wife can possibly get along. Justin is a big time jerk who can't really get along with women. Unless he is controlling them. Doesn't matter if it's his wife or just a friend. I look forward to reading more books by this author.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2024I just finished Lockdown. I wasn't sure I was going to like this one. The main character made me question all of her decisions. But then it tied in at the 80% mark. I had a hard time putting it down. I will read more by Maria Frankland. An abusive husband during covid when everyone had to shelter in place and not even go to work. He was very controlling and mean. She was pregnant and afraid of catching covid with her baby.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2024This was a very fast paced and suspenseful read. I don’t normally get too attached to the characters in these psychological thrillers but this one is different and I really wanted Melissa, Annie and Lynette to have a happy ending. You will have to read it to find out if they did…

2.0 out of 5 stars dull
i thought the Covid situation lent itself to a story that should have been atmospheric, tense and fraught; but instead I found the storytelling was pretty dull, the characters not very well fleshed out and the plot reveals very predictable. The "mystery" neighbour lady was obvious; Justin's stomach problems, super obvious as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lockdown
A novel with a touch of grim reality of the physical and mental drains that lockdown had on so many people in abusive relationship that led to them cut off from vital support. Well written and enjoyed reading it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lockdown Luck Down
I did enjoy this book, it brought back all the claustrophobia of the first lockdown and the uncertainty of what was happening.
However, I found the character of Melissa somewhat frustrating.
Granted she was pregnant and asthmatic, but she had so many opportunities to get out of the house and away from the abusive Justin - but didn't.
Her friend Annie offered her refuge, but she refused as it "was too near to her home", surely any place away from Justin was better than staying?
Melissa desperately wanted to go out once when he was in a drunken sleep - did she? Nope - she did some yoga and had breakfast in the garden...... *Sigh*
The Police called twice on a report of a 'disturbance', but did she leave? Nope.....she was too frightened of catching the 'Virus'.
What was more important - her safety and escape from the horrible hubbie - or perhaps getting ill?!
This spoilt my enjoyment of the book a bit.
I'm giving it 4* because it was a good read and brought back memories of Lockdown.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic read
Another great read . Maria has a way of keeping you wanting to read more and for the book not to end. I can’t recommend this author highly enough.

3.0 out of 5 stars Everyone has a lockdown story…
We were all going through the same experience, but our circumstances were different. Some were front line workers, some waving to family inside nursing homes, some taking weeks off and doing their gardens and as we all know some locked up with abusive partners. This story was one of frustration, fear and anger. But she was trapped. Why she didn’t phone the police when she got the chance, I don’t know, thankfully it’s not a situation I completely understand.
